Green (fresh sawn) oak beams are a classic choice for timber-framed buildings across the UK. Freshly cut from the log, these beams have a high moisture content, making them easier to work with than air-dried oak, which can be exceptionally hard and can blunt tools.
Green oak is particularly suited for cutting joints and peg holes, as it's easier to shape before natural cracking begins.
Strength and Durability
At WL West, our green oak beams offer exceptional strength, durability, and high resistance to decay, all without the need for chemical treatments—making them both maintenance-free and environmentally friendly.
Responsibly sourced from managed woodlands in France, each beam is crafted to high standards at our sawmill in Sussex. As the beams dry slowly, they adjust naturally over time, making them ideal for structures that allow for slight movement and shrinkage.
Grade and Finish
Our structural green oak beams are graded QP1 with a sawn finish, ensuring quality and consistency.
Sizing
Green oak beams are supplied marginally over length, in line with standard industry practice, allowing you to cut down to precise measurements on-site. Each sawn beam has a tolerance of 5mm.
Please note that freshly sawn beams will gradually shrink in width and thickness, and natural surface cracks may develop over time, enhancing their rustic character.
For custom sizes, please contact our Sales Team for a personalised quote.
