Iroko Milicia excelsa/Milicia regia (Chlorophora excelsa)
Iroko is a handsome, versatile and durable hardwood from the tropical west coast of Africa. Golden in colour, the timber varies from light yellows to honey browns, turning to a darker brown on exposure to UV light. It will have colour variation. Exceptionally strong and dense, Iroko is naturally resistant to insect attack and decay.
As Iroko is highly durable and scratch-resistant, it is ideal for a wide range of internal and external uses such as decking, pergolas, kitchen worktops, bartops and cabinet making. Due to its density, Iroko also works well as flooring and, when peeled, is a lovely veneer. The timber is generally easy to work but it can dull tools. Iroko stains and glues well and can be brought up to a high-quality finish. It does have an oil content that requires degreasing before gluing.

Iroko is graded into the UK as FAS (which derives from an original grade: First And Seconds) - minimum yield 83% clear wood cuttings on the poor face of the board. The FAS grade will provide the user with long, clear cuttings – best suited for high quality furniture, interior joinery and solid wood mouldings.

Pre-drill. Stainless steel nails preferred. Iroko glues well but may need degreasing to help bond the surfaces.
