Green Douglas Fir Beams

The majestic Douglas Fir may be native to North America but it has thrived in the rainy UK since it was introduced in 1827! Trees can grow up to a height of 40 metres with a diameter of over 2 metres. The timber has a distinctive character, with its attractive salmon pink hue and darker growth rings, maturing to a deeper reddish-brown over time.

The king of UK softwoods, native Douglas Fir has the highest strength rating of a softwood, good durability and density. It is 60% stiffer than ordinary softwood pine and 40% harder in impact, plus 30% stiffer in bending. This means it is a valuable and cost-effective timber for building and construction, from structural beams to flooring and external cladding.

Our Douglas Fir is sustainably sourced from a responsibly-managed neighbouring estate in West Sussex, meaning it has a very low carbon footprint. As it has a lower moisture content and seasons more quickly than hardwood, it can take surface finishes to bring out its natural character.

About green Douglas Fir beams

  • Douglas Fir is very straight grained and performs best in straight frames. It is more stable, predictable and 30% lighter in weight than oak and, as structural beams, offers a cost-effective alternative.

  • As Douglas Fir is stable and holds a decent edge when cut, its sharp edges, clean lines and smooth surface make it an excellent choice for a contemporary space.

  • Douglas Fir dries well and the shrinkage in the UK is around 7-10% of the tangential width and approximately 5% in thickness after drying to approximately 12% moisture content.

  • Our Douglas Fir beams are available up to 7 metres, with section sizes up to 400 x 400mm depending on log availability,

Additional Information

  • Sections available - Up to 400 x 400mm and up to 7m depending on log availability.

Shrinkage - 5-7% in its width and 0.5% in its length.

  • Generally easy to work although it has a moderate blunting effect on cutters. Knots can become loose as the wood dries out.

  • Timber should be regularly inspected signs of decay, such as cracks or splits. Keep beams clean and dry to prevent the growth of mould or mildew. Apply a protective finish, such as a wood preservative or oil, to protect the timber from insects and decay.

  • All fixings should be stainless steel.
