Wests Woodshow 2006 - Review

What a fantastic two days. Last year was the inaugural West’s Wood Show and we were knocked over with the response. And this year has been no less impressive. Over the two days nearly 1100 people visited the show. A 200 increase on last years show. With a variety of exhibitors there was something for everyone.

Our professionals this year were Colin Simpson – editor of the Woodturning magazine. Colin told us that he took a dramatic career change from IT to woodturning, and it gives him a buzz every time he turns.

Nick Agar joined us from Dartington in Devon. Nick is not just a woodturner, but an artist. He uses the lath to sculpt a beautiful item out of a natural material. Elm was one such raw material that in its own right is a beautiful and rich timber, but Nick just makes it better still.

Les Thorne also joined us again. Les is the most local professional at the show, and again used his unique style to draw a large audience. Les often turns with wet woods and this year he was demonstrating this to the public, using wet Ash and Scots Pine.

We are building our relationships with local wood craft clubs, this year the Surrey Association of Woodturners were again well represented. Solent Guild of Woodcarvers were able to join us for the Friday.

Pilgrim Harps from South Godstone in Surrey joined us for both days. This company makes the most superb Harps you have seen, with quite amazing craftsmanship.

Even our own Jo West had a go!!

James Murcell shows the traditional ways to make a chair seat.

Our good friend chair maker Jack Hill talks to some of our visitors. Jack runs courses in Bognor.

Jack chats to colleague Paul Bicknell. Paul kindly carved an excerpt of the West family tree, showing the members of the family that are still involved with the business.

We believe in ensuring that education is involved in our industry, and this year we again had the furniture making departments of Chichester College and Central Sussex College (formerly Crawley College) join us. By request they brought a couple of students each to work on some of their projects.

The work that these students turn out is superb, and very encouraging for the future of independent furniture making.

One new demonstrator at the show was our own Gary Renouf. Gary normally work in the Sales office with trade customers. But his passion is woodturning, and is something of an expert. We encouraged his skills at this show, and he thoroughly enjoyed himself.
